Kin star Emmett J Scanlan has offered a glimmer of hope to fans that a third season of the hit RTÉ crime drama could be on the way.

Written, created, and executive produced by Peter McKenna, Kin follows the Kinsellas, a local crime family in Dublin in a gang war with global organisation, the Cunningham cartel.

The gritty RTÉ thriller is one of the most successful shows to come out of Ireland, with almost 600,000 people tuning in to the nail-biting second season finale, the last episode of the series to be released to date.

Kin season two earned critical acclaim and picked up five prizes at April's IFTA Awards ceremony. The show gained a new level of popularity when season 2 landed on BBC iPlayer back in February, becoming one of the top five most watched shows on the streaming site the week of its release.

Despite its popularity, doubts have been cast on the show returning of a third season, leaving fans all over Ireland, and now the world, devastated.

While fans may be losing hope that the show will return for a third season, Kin star Emmett J Scanlan says he is choosing to "remain as positive as possible" that new episodes could be in the pipeline.

"There are a lot of people who are interested in buying it, so I believe," Emmett J Scanlan, who plays Jimmy Kinsella on the hit RTÉ series, told Radio Times. "But who it's going to be and where it's going to land, I have no idea.

"I try to remain as positive as possible. I love the show and am so proud to have been a part of it. If indeed we come back for a season 3 – and I know the numbers on BBC iPlayer were insane – I'll be there in a heartbeat.

"In less time than it takes a heart to beat, I'll be there, and I'm sure everybody else will be as well."

While Kin has proved a critical and commercial hit, reports emerged earlier this year that the show would not be returning to screens for a third season as the main actors' contracts have reportedly finished up.

Sinan Sicimoglu, who played the pawn shop owner where the Kinsella family hid their money, told the Irish Sun: "It's the end of the Kinsellas because all the main actors signed three-year contracts in 2020 to appear in Kin, but it's now 2024 and those contract have run out."
