Richard Keys has urged Manchester United to sack Erik ten Hag, claiming he has reduced the club to a laughing stock through his inept management.

United were thrashed 3-0 at Old Trafford by Liverpool on Sunday in a match which showed how far behind their rivals they remain. Ten Hag saw his squad bolstered by £250million investment in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte, but his side have made a stuttering start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Ten Hag turned heads in the build-up to the match by defending his record by pointing out that his United team have won more trophies than Liverpool in the past few years. Those quotes appeared ill-advised on Sunday as Liverpool tore his side apart, benefitting from two Casemiro errors to run away with the match.

The Dutchman only held onto his job by the skin of his teeth in the summer after winning the FA Cup, but already finds himself under pressure. Former Sky Sports presenter Keys thinks Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his executive team should pull the trigger early to avoid further damage.

“Your team was hopeless in both halves,” Keys wrote in his blog. “How many times have I said he lives in a parallel universe? It’s embarrassing. Remember – this is Manchester Uniiiited.

“I’d sack him now. No. I’d have sacked him in the summer. Maybe even before that. He’s not the right man to manage United. He’s reducing them to a laughing stock. ‘I’m not Harry Potter ’, he went on to tell reporters. He’s right. I’d say more Graham Potter.”

He added: “If there had been any Utd fans left inside Old Trafford on the final whistle surely they’d have let Ten Hag know how they were feeling? All you could hear were Liverpool supporters, who‘d enjoyed watching their team ram those daft words back down Ten Hag’s throat. I wonder if the clever people running United have got the balls to sack him during this break? Why not?”

United openly courted other managers over the summer as they pondered Ten Hag’s future and the rumours have already resumed. Thomas Tuchel remains available after his departure from Bayern Munich and is reportedly being lined up to take the role if results don’t improve.

Publicly, however, United are continuing to support Ten Hag, with chief executive Omar Berrada saying: "Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together, as [sporting director] Dan [Ashworth] has said before, in this transfer window. We're going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team. Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we're fully backing him."
