Rory McIlroy plans to play less tournament golf in 2025 after, what he described as, a 'long season'.

It was another rollercoaster year for McIlroy, winning three times but also suffering the heartbreak to end all heartbreaks as he threw away a chance to win the US Open and land his first major in 10 6ears.

But with the clock ticking and McIlroy now aged 35, the Northern Ireland golfer plans to lighten his load going forward.

“It's been a long season, and I'm going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-US Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover,” said McIlroy.

“I'm usually sort of like a 22 sort of person. But again, that was when I was sort of in my 20s and didn't have the responsibilities that I do now. I'm going to try to cut it back to like 18 or 20 a year going forward, I think.”

McIlroy rounded off his PGA Tour seasons in tandem as they both pocketed $1,608,333 pay cheques from the Tour Championship.

The four-time major winner finished in a tie for ninth place at East Lake Golf Club to pocket a handsome share of the $100m bonus pool for the climax of the FedEx Cup playoffs and was joined alongside Shane Lowry.

The FedEx Cup title and the mammoth $25,000,000 first prize went to Scottie Scheffler.

The world number one coasted home for a four-shot victory over Collin Morikawa to claim his seventh title of a dominant season on the PGA Tour.

It is the first time Scheffler has won the season-long race, having led going into the Tour Championship on two previous occasions.

He adds his $25 million bonus money to the $29,228,357 he earned in official money this season, the most in PGA Tour history.

McIlroy, won twice on the PGA Tour this season and finished with total earnings, including the FedEx Cup bonus, of $12,501,000.

Lowry, meanwhile, who combined with McIlroy to win the Zurich Classic, is $7,703,000 richer from his season on the PGA Tour.

Both players are set to take next week off before competing in the Irish Open at Royal County Down.
