Baz Ashmawy is writing a second series of his hit black comedy Faithless, we can reveal.

The telly favourite has been holed up working on the script and hopes Virgin Media will air season two of the show. He told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “I am currently writing away. Whether or not it gets fully green-lit, I’m not sure.

“But they’ve given me the job of writing the second series, so hopefully all going well, Faithless season two will be a go. Fingers crossed, but, yeah, very excited about it. It’s shaping up well, and it’s a lot of fun. You know, it’s my baby, so I love it.”

Faithless, which follows the story of a mixed-race dad in Bray, Co Wicklow, dealing with the loss of his wife, was a ratings hit last year. The critically acclaimed series was equally well received in the US and Canada, and in Australia where the rights were sold to SBS.

Self-confessed workaholic Baz, 49, is back on our screens this week for a new series of RTÉ show Best Place to Be.

Asked if he could live anywhere in the world where would he choose he replied: “I’m a home bird really. I’m happy to holiday anywhere in the world. I love getting on a flight. I love going on my holidays.

“I’d spend a couple of months abroad. But when it comes down to it, because of my mom, all the kids around and all that, I probably just love Ireland. I’m just very much a home bird, and I love Irish people.”

Despite his varied career in front of the camera for many Baz is still best known for his hit Sky series 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy. But, he joked, he’s unlikely to embark on any future projects with his mum Nancy because she commands a higher fee than him.

He quipped: “If I’m the busiest TV presenter she’s the busiest woman I know. But TV-wise, she’s not really sniffing too much. I can’t afford her any more, that’s the problem with Nancy. Who can afford her rates?”

He added: “She’s just constantly flying around, down in West Cork with her pals, out in the Canaries with my kids... she’s very active. She’s going to Medjugorje soon as well. You can’t keep a lid on the woman, she’s amazing to be flying around at her age.

“She’s got a big network of friends all over the country and the world. She likes to go and check in on them all, all the time, I need to take a leaf out of her book.”
