Man charged with rape and murder of 65-year-old woman in Derry
The woman’s body was found in an apartment where a fire had been reported during the early hours of Saturday morning
A man has been charged with murder, rape and arson following the death of a 65-year-old woman in Derry at the weekend.
Police launched a murder investigation following the death of the Montserrat Martorell, whose body was found in the bedroom of a ground-floor flat in the Harvey Street area where a fire had been reported on Saturday, August 24.
A 28-year-old man had been arrested as part of the investigation on Monday, August 26, and has now been charged with murder, rape and arson with intent to endanger life. He is due to appear at Derry Magistrates Court on Thursday, August 29.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Detectives from The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team, investigating the murder of 65-year-old Montserrat Martorell in Derry/Londonderry on Saturday, 24th August, have charged a 28-year-old man with her murder.
"In addition to the charge of Murder, the man has been charged with Rape and Arson With Intent to Endanger Life.
"The man is expected to appear before Londonderry Magistrates Court tomorrow, Thursday 29th August. As is normal procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service."
