Down's Charlie Smyth has been handed an NFL lifeline after being added to the New Orleans Saints practice squad.
Smyth did not make the Saints' 53-man roster with NFL teams given a Tuesday deadline to make their final cuts.
As part of that process, the remaining 31 teams had 24 hours to sign Smyth themselves on a waiver claim but Smyth passed through waivers unsuccessfully.

But all hope is not lost with the Saints signing Smyth to their practice squad and he is likely to stay signed to the team for the season.
As part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, teams can retain an international player to their practice squad with that player not counting towards their practice squad limit.
This means that unless the Saints have a massive change of heart, they will be heavily incentivised to keep Smyth as part of their plans for the 2024 season.
The Mayobridge man can be called up to the regular roster on up to three occasions before he is made permanent. He will earn approximately $12,500 every week he is on the practice squad.
Swatragh’s Jude McAtamney has also been given an International exemption and has signed to the New York Giants' practice squad.
