Former goalkeeper Philly Ryan has emerged as the choice to take charge of the Tipperary senior footballers.

The Clonmel Commercials man was between the posts for the county senior team from 1990 to 2003, a period during which Tipp reached four Munster finals but couldn’t crack traditional powers Kerry and Cork, though they did push the latter to a replay in 2002.

Previously a manager of the Tipperary minor footballers, he has earned the recommendation of the county’s football committee and his name now goes forward for ratification on a three-year term, with a review at the end of the 2026 season.

Paul Cahill (Grangemockler Ballyneale) and Cathal Naughton (JK Brackens) will be part of his management team, with others to be added in the coming weeks.

Ryan will succeed Dubliner Paul Kelly, who served just one year in the role before stepping down. Having been relegated last year, Tipp struggled in Division Four, made a swift exit from the Munster Championship and lost three of their four Tailteann Cup games.

Speaking on his impending appointment, Ryan said: “My philosophy has always been that football is all about the players. Players will judge me on how much I care as well as how much I know.

"The team is the star so every individual player and management member will have to leave their ego at the door. I subscribe to the old saying - it’s amazing what can be achieved when nobody cares who gets the credit.”

Ryan has also pledged to play on the front foot, saying: “We will try to carry the game to the opposition rather than defending deep, waiting for turnover and trying to play counter attacking football. We will be progressive and aggressive”.

Meanwhile, in Kerry, John Griffin of Lixnaw has been appointed as the county’s new senior hurling manager, succeeding Waterford’s Stephen Molumphy, with Brian Sargent (Tralee Parnells) will take charge of the minor hurlers.

Tomás Ó Sé and Wayne Quillinan have each been granted one-year extensions as managers of the under-20 and minor footballers respectively.
