Dublin Airport passengers warn

It's set to be another busy week at Dublin Airport with many people jetting off to sunnier climates before the summer holidays draw to a close. However, those travelling from Sunday onwards, are being reminded about a major hand luggage change in EU airport regulations.

Anyone who has taken to the skies in the last two decades will be aware that passengers are prohibited from carrying any liquids over 100mls in their hand luggage. Additionally, all liquids must be packed into a small, clear bag when passing through airport security. The rule came into force in 2006 following the discovery of a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks on several transatlantic flights.

But with advancements in technology for scanning liquids, travellers at certain airports may have spotted fancy new machines that scan liquids more effectively, meaning you don't need to remove them from your bag, or in some cases, adhere to the volume of liquid rules.

Over the past year, Dublin Airport has been gradually rolling out these new scanners which allow passengers to carry liquids of any size in their luggage without having to remove them. It also applies to electronics, which previously had to be removed from bags, reports Dublin Live.

But later this week, passengers across Europe, including those departing from Ireland, will once again have to adhere to the strict 100ml liquid limit for hand luggage. From Sunday, September 1, the EU-wide rule will be reintroduced requiring all liquids in carry-on bags to be in containers of 100ml or less and placed in a transparent bag.

While it will seem like business as usual for many flyers since several airports never departed from the original rule, those which had adopted the new scanning technology are reminding passengers to revert back. Bigger bottles will need to be stashed in checked baggage. There aren't any strict limits there, but make sure they're tightly closed to avoid any messy accidents.

Dublin Airport has issued a reminder about the rules when it comes to liquids. A spokesperson said: "Dublin Airport is advising passengers to prepare for security in advance and make their way directly to the security screening area once checked in, to ensure the smoothest journey possible.

"While Dublin Airport has commenced the roll-out of new enhanced C3 scanners in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, the rules around liquids remain the same and passengers must continue to prepare for security as normal.

"To help prepare for the security screening process, passengers should read the handy tips and advice on the Dublin Airport website. Travellers are reminded that EU security regulations state that liquids over 100ml cannot be brought through the security screening area. Liquids under 100ml are permitted and should be placed in a single transparent, re-sealable bag measuring not more than 20cm x 20cm. Exemptions are in place for medicines and for baby food."

Separately, Ireland West Airport confirmed: "From September 1, 2024, changes to EU regulation will see the re-introduction of temporary liquid restrictions at airports in the EU."

The new European Commission directive for EU airports said that from September 1, "passengers will not be permitted to carry liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in containers greater than 100ml in their cabin baggage through security at the airport. All liquid, aerosol and gels (LAGs) must be stored in containers of 100ml or less and stored in clear transparent bags and taken out of your cabin baggage before going through security. There will be no limit on the number of plastic bags used per passenger."

Travellers are advised to check local airport regulations as scanning systems may vary.
