Mariah Carey has announced the heartbreaking news that both her mother and sister have both died.

The 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' hitmaker made the heart-wrenching announcement on Monday that both her mum Patricia and sister Alison sadly passed away on the same day over the weekend.

Speaking to People, a distraught Mariah, aged 55, expressed, "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend." Mariah continued, "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."

Detailing her recent precious moments, the award-winning artist said, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed." The mum-of-two added, "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time," before concluding her statement.

The 'Always Be My Baby' songstress did not reveal any further details about the events that led to the deaths and did not elaborate at all on the situation beyond her initial statement. Currently, the causes of death for Patricia and Alison remain undisclosed. Patricia, an accomplished opera singer, and Alfred Roy Carey were parents to Alison, Mariah, and Morgan.

Patricia - who divorced the late Alfred Roy Carey in 1973 - was an opera singer and vocal coach before giving birth to her first child, whilst Alison endured some personal struggles including homelessness throughout her life and has been estranged from her superstar sibling for a number of years.

Throughout her life, Mariah has spoken about the complex nature of her relationship with her mother, from whom she inherited her singing talent. In her autobiography, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', she delved into their dynamic, writing: "Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.

"It's never been only black-and-white - it's been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment," Mariah added in her memoir. "A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."

Despite a roller coaster of emotions in their relationship, Mariah never cut ties with her mother, Patricia. The pair joined forces for a heartwarming performance during ABC's Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You in 2010, serenading the audience with a mother-daughter duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus."

In her tell-all memoir, Mariah shared a poignant dedication to Patricia: "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could," revealing her continued love and complex emotions, "I will love you the best I can, always."

Mariah's bond with her sister Alison was also said to be complicated. Describing their connection as fraught, Mariah confessed in her memoir that for her own wellbeing, it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" with Alison or her brother Morgan at that time.

The multi award-winning singer, who shares 13-year-old twins son Morocco and daughter Monroe with ex Nick Cannon, previously discussed "dysfunction" festive celebrations during her childhood. The undisputed queen of Christmas tunes opened up about bittersweet Christmas memories back in 2021.

Despite the global success of her iconic track All I Want For Christmas Is You, which still reigns supreme after 30 years, Mariah's childhood recollections are tinged with disappointment. In a candid chat, the 55 year old songstress delved into her holiday habits and looked back on the challenging times of her youth.

Reflecting on her past, she revealed in 2021: "I always wanted Christmas to be perfect and I always looked forward to the holidays, but I had this incredibly dysfunctional family that would ruin it every year." She recounted how, as a child, she would often find nothing more than fruit wrapped up under the Christmas tree, vowing, "I was like, 'When I grow up, I am never going to let that happen. I am going to make Christmas perfect every year'."
