Rory McIlroy took home a staggering $500,000 for his T-11th place finish at the BMW championship this weekend.

The World number two shot six-under for the tournament to finish just outside the top-10 as Keegan Bradley picked up a cheque worth $3.6 million for his week’s work.

For McIlroy, a finish of 11th was excellent going given the drama he subjected himself to all week long. First, there was a bizarre incident in the second round on Friday when after an errant tee shot, McIlroy threw his three wood into a water hazard before hastily fishing it out.

Water caused problems for Rory on Sunday as well. Following a loose tee shot that seemed destined for the drink on the par-4 ninth, McIlroy angrily leaned on his driver as he bent down to pick up his tee, causing the club to snap in two.

Luckily for McIlroy, his ball somehow stayed dry. Unluckily for the four-time major champion, his ball was positioned in such a way that the only way to get a swing was to stand in the adjacent stream.

Taking off his shoes and socks, McIlroy stepped into the water, balanced on a couple of rocks and hit a dream of an iron shot into the heart of the green before two-putting for Par. The Holywood star was one-over for his round at that stage, but rallied after the turn for home to sign off with a final round of 71.

At the top of the leaderboard come the end of play on Sunday was incoming Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, who was immediately looking ahead to next week’s FedEx Cup finale.

“Oh, man, it just shows why you've got to grind it out every week because you never know how fast it can switch," Bradley said.

"Now I go to Atlanta with a chance to win the FedEx Cup. I can't believe it. I'm so excited."

Both McIlroy and fellow Irish star Shane Lowry will be at east lake for the Tour Championship next week where they will be bidding to win the FedEx cup and take home $25 million.
