RTE viewers were in detective mode as they clocked a curious detail during the opening night of the Rose of Tralee.

While fashion's always a big deal at the festival, it appears that red was the shade du jour for most Roses this time around. TV buffs were buzzing about the selection, questioning if there was a secret dress code.

One viewer quipped: "Four of five Roses so far wearing red dresses. Backdrop also lots of red. Why?"

A second observer puzzled: "Nah only 2 dresses haven't been red, what's going on", reports RSVP Live. A third added: "Take a shot every time a rose is wearing a red dress".

Another telly fan announced: "Red is the colour of the year so far! One viewer added: "Missed the memo on red dresses", while someone else shared an image of Chris de Burgh, captioning it: "Ladies in red".

Chances are, red reigning supreme is just happenstance given its flattering appeal, with all the Roses looking smashing in their radiant outfits.

Nevertheless, a sleuth from the comfort of their couch suggested a simple reason for the colour craze: "Roses are red so maybe that".

It looks like the nation was primed for the Rose of Tralee fun, eagerly sharing their thrill for the yearly spectacle of sparkle and style set in Kerry.

One viewer remarked: "Settle in, folks, it's #RoseOfTralee time again. Over the next two nights we'll ponder such important questions as why doesn't Daithi ever seem to age, can you die of second hand embarrassment and if we melted down all the Newbridge jewelry could we pay down the national debt? ".

Another fan shared their excitement online: "Loving this year's Rose of Tralee. Fabulous dresses, Daithi O Se in a fancy purple suit jacket. A beautiful night 1 in the Dome. Can't wait for the rest of the show tonight."

A third audience member revealed their emotions: "It's rose night. It's normal to have cried already even though they are on rose 4 ya.....i just love it".

  • The Rose of Tralee concludes on RTE One from 8pm on Tuesday
