Ashley Biden, the rarely-seen daughter of US President Joe Biden, warmed hearts as she introduced her dad at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he was greeted by a sea of chanting supporters on Monday.

In an emotional speech, she referred to Joe Biden's tragic history and said his son Beau "is always with us," triggering tears from her father.

Despite a less public profile compared to other Biden family members, Ashley has been a steadfast supporter of her father from a young age. With genuine affection, she reminisced about childhood moments with her "adoring" father during her speech, including times spent doing homework in his office, which culminated in a touching emotional embrace with the President.

Born in June 1981, 43-year-old Ashley is the only child of Joe and his second wife, Jill Biden. She quickly became the apple of her family's eye, with mum Jill revealing to Delaware Today magazine in 2018 how her brothers Beau and Hunter instantly took to their younger sister.

"Her brothers looked after her. And, she always looked up to them. Wherever they went, she wanted to go, and they took her," Jill shared.

Opening up about her personal relationship with her father, she said the standard he had set through his public service had impelled her to become a social worker and help those who need it most. Biden's daughter said the President had a talent in speaking to people "living with grief", due to his own experience losing his first wife and daughter in a 1972 car crash, and then son Beau in 2015 to brain cancer.

After her speech, Biden took to the stage to rapturous applause and screams of "We love Joe", but paused to embrace his daughter Ashley. Pulling back from her, Joe pulled a tissue out of his pocket and wiped a tear from his face, visibly moved by her words.

Ashley Biden, as a young girl, had heartfelt discussions with her father about the plight of dolphins getting caught in tuna fishing nets. She has always been a vocal advocate for animal rights, the Mirror US reports.

This led to Senator Biden introducing the Dolphin Protection Consumer Information Act in 1990. He worked alongside Democratic Representative Barbara Boxer of California to ensure the bill's passage, which mandated tuna companies to label their products as dolphin-safe.

The Windy City has earned the moniker 'police state' during the DNC as bike patrols, K9 units, and the Coast Guard stood watch amidst protest activity. Stepping back from the race, President Biden will cut short his DNC attendance following his Monday speech, opting for a Californian holiday while his party crowns Kamala Harris as its nominee for the November election.

On the opening night of the DNC, Vice-President Kamala Harris delivered an unexpected speech ahead of Joe Biden's main address. Her appearance on the platform was met with thunderous applause from thousands of attendees.

The DNC is currently underway in Chicago, with nearly 50,000 attendees expected in the Windy City. This includes thousands of anti-war protestors who are demonstrating near the convention venue, with some even breaching a police-erected fence.

The conference will showcase prime-time broadcast speeches and events until Thursday. The full schedule is yet to be finalised, but Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, are set to take the traditionally reserved slots on Wednesday and Thursday.
