Olympic hero Daire Lynch had his medal taken off him over a 'chronic issue' that saw the condition of the bronze deteriorate.

Lynch and Philip Doyle raced to a third-place finish in their rowing medal race earlier this month but have seen the condition of their medals drop over a short amount of time.

So much so that Tipperary man Lynch had his medal taken off him and replaced with a new one. And Olympic organisers say they are using the medal to investigate why the bronze medals have been affected so badly.

Appearing on Ireland AM this morning, Doyle showed off his medal and said: "Mine is gone wrecked. It's nearly gone the next layer down."

While Lynch added: "I wanted to keep mine but they wanted to take it away for research. They want to see what is wrong with the medals."

And Doyle said: "Some of the gold but not too many but the bronze seems to be a chronic issue."

The Lisburn native also opened up on his nerves the morning of the race: "The night before was perfect and I felt great and went to sleep the whole way.

"We do a bit of training together on the morning of the race to get the body warmed up and I said I felt good and the mind felt good and then I tried to eat the breakfast and it was like eating sick and I was looking across to him and I was taking little bites and he was like 'I can't eat this'

"That was real nerves."

The pair contributed to Ireland's record medal haul with the Team bringing home seven medals in total, including four golds.
