Everton fans were left asking the same question after Ireland star Jake O'Brien was an unused substitute during their 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Brighton.

The Toffees acquired O'Brien for a whopping £17m ahead of the new season as they look to bolster their defence.

But 23-year-old O'Brien found himself bench-warming for the first game as Everton lost their season opener 3-0.

And Sean Dyche was asked by media after the game why O'Brien started over Michael Keane.

"The reason why he didn't start is because Michael Keane had a very strong pre-season. He's been very unfortunate to get injured at Preston but he's had a very strong pre-season and he's a very experienced Premier League player.

"Jake hasn't got that experience but we think he's a very good player and I think he'll learn quickly. He's come and been very open-minded about the nuts and bolts and how quick the game is.

"He's a very good player and we think he'll develop into it."

And Everton fans were confused by the Ireland international's absence as they took to social media to vent their frustrations.

"Why did Sean Dyche not start Jake O’Brien or Lindstrom after the preseason they had? Were they injured?" said one social media user.

"Much rather we were beaten today with Jake O'Brien, Ndiaye, and Jesper Lindstrøm in the side," said another.

"This is what Everton deserve for benching Jake O’Brien," said another social media user.

O'Brien earned the move after an impressive season with Lyon and started his career with Cork City.
