Irish Olympic hero John Joe Nevin successfully returned to professional boxing on Saturday night when he won his first bout in five years.

The London 2012 silver medal winner had not fought professionally since 2019 but returned to the ring, beating Jose Hernandez Flores (9-14-1) in a six-round super lightweight contest.

Nevin improved his professional record to 15-0 following the victory but has not been seen inside a ring since November 2019 when he beat Nicaraguan fighter Freddy Fonseca.

Nevin returned to action in an event in Jiutepec, Mexico and picked up where he left off with a win over Flores in a low-profile event that took place nearly 80kms away from Mexico City.

He had been due to fight former WBO Youth Champion Shaun Cooper in April 2021, but the event fell to Covid in what proved to be a big blow for the Mullingar man.
