Everton saw a penalty taken from them against Brighton despite the Video Assistant Referee process suffering from a glitch at Goodison Park.

With the Toffees 1-0 down, it appeared they had found an opportunity to get back into the game following Kaoru Mitoma 's 25th-minute strike. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was initially judged to have been fouled in the Seagulls' area under a challenge from Lewis Dunk, with referee Simon Hooper pointing to the spot.

The fervour on Merseyside was soon tempered however as VAR reviewed the incident. Dwight McNeil stood with the ball in the penalty area, but Hooper was soon tasked with going to the pitchside monitor, with the possibility of an incorrect decision now arising.

The official approached for a review and left many in confusion with it appearing that Hooper did not see a replay of the alleged foul before taking the decision to cancel the penalty. The main monitor did not appear to show the footage.

The Premier League has since confirmed a back-up screen was available to the referee, where he watched the passage of play before confirming his decision to overturn the spotkick. Sean Dyche's side were left only with a drop ball for their efforts.

The Premier League Match Centre explained the process: "The referee awarded a penalty to Everton for a foul by Dunk on Calvert-Lewin. The VAR recommended an on-field review as he deemed Calvert-Lewin’s foot landed on Dunk’s foot and there was no foul. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

Everton's day did not get any better as Brighton only extended their lead before 90 minutes was up. Former Manchester United and Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck netted after 56 minutes before Simon Adingra rounded off the scoring in the 86th.

Brighton saw a fourth goal ruled out after Yasin Ayari found the net, while Ashley Young was earlier shown a red card. Both decisions saw VAR also make its checks.

The Match Centre said of Young: "The referee issued a red card to Young for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity with a foul on Mitoma. VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call."

On Ayari's strike: "Ayari’s goal was initially given on-field. The VAR confirmed he was offside and the goal was disallowed."
