RTE viewers left 'heartbroken'

RTE viewers have said they were left 'heartbroken' after watching Sharlene Mawdsley's post-race interview after Ireland finished fourth in the 4x400m relay final.

Team Ireland smashed their National Record as they finished agonisingly short of a medal with Team GB and the Netherlands scooping bronze and silver.

USA won the race comfortably but Ireland, Team GB , and the Netherlands ran a pulsating final leg for the medals.

But Mawdsley missed out narrowly on a medal despite running a personal best final leg of 49.14 with Femke Bol and Amber Anning pipping her on the line.

And the Tipperary athlete, who turned 26 today, was visibly distraught while speaking to RTE after the race.

"If you had told me only a couple of days ago that we would have come fourth I would have been elated but when you're out on that last leg it does kind of feel like it's your fault," Mawdsley told David Gillick.

"I know I ran the best I could and when Amber Anning came up on me I'm aware Feke (Bol) is behind me. It's a hard leg and I'm pretty devastated. I just wish I could have done it for the girls, especially for Rhasidat after yesterday. It's heartbreaking but we still broke a national record and that was my aim in the meeting today so I can't ask for much more.

"Even when I got the baton I knew I had such a good position and I did my best to see what we could do. The girls put me in such an amazing position and I am obviously devastated that I couldn't hold on and get us that medal but you never know, the future of Irish sprinting is so bright."

And viewers took to social media, saying they were 'heartbroken' watching an emotional Mawdsley.

One viewer wrote: "Nearly cried watching this interview with Sharlene Mawdsley at the end, so so unlucky not to win a medal after an amazing run and she’s devastated thinking she let everyone down when we couldn’t be more proud of their achievements."

While another said: "I'm crying with the girls. They are such amazing women! They have broken so many barriers in women's and Irish sport!"

While another added: "I feel heartbroken that Sharlene Mawdsley is blaming herself. She has absolutely nothing to be ashamed for and she performed brilliantly and out of her skin like the rest of the team."
