Online scammers have tried to take advantage of Jay Slater's funeral by offering access to a fake livestream to the event - wanting money, likes and follows in return.

The 19-year-old's funeral is taking place on Saturday after it was reported he fell to his death after going missing in a mountainous area of Tenerife on June 17. However, several troll accounts have appeared to target his funeral, with a charity admitting that getting the accounts removed is "endless work".

According to Matthew Searle, chief executive of LBT Global, some scam accounts were asking for "donations". In return, they were offering a fake livestream link to his funeral.

He said: "We are inundated with reports of these scams, and as fast as we can get the platforms to remove them, more appear. To be completely clear: there is no live stream of Jay's funeral and anyone claiming to offer one is a scam. It is so typical of the vile trolling this family have received for them to target something so special as a funeral."

Slater's disappearance made national headlines and triggered a huge search operation until his body was found in a ravine on July 15, the Guardian reported. The tragic discovery was made by Civil Guard officers from the mountain rescue division, with evidence indicating at the time he had died "due to an accidental fall in the rough and inaccessible area where he was found".

At the time, a spokesperson for the Civil Guard said: "After 29 constant days of searching the lifeless body of the young man has been found in the Masca area. The discovery has been possible thanks to the tireless and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard over these 29 days."

It brought an end to the four-week search for the missing 19-year-old, who was an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. He had been on the island with two friends for a three-day music festival. Matthew Searle added that the only authentic donation page linked to Slater is the one on the LBT Global website.

Slater's funeral - described as a "celebration of life service" - is set to take place at Accrington Cemetery Chapel on Saturday at 10.30am before burial. In a statement issued through LBT Global, his family said: "If anyone would like to bring a single rose to place with Jay, they are more than welcome."
