The parents of a young Irish man who was hospitalised in the UK following a horrific bike accident have thanked the public for an outpouring of generosity which has meant they can stay by his bedside.

Anthony O’Carroll, a 27-year-old mechanic from Ballyduff in Kerry, was seriously injured in a motorbike accident on the Isle of Man. The young man was rushed to Nobles Hospital and then airlifted to Walton Centre for Neuroscience in Liverpool due to the multiple injuries sustained during the crash.

Anthony is the only child of his adoring parents Mary and Neilus, who flew from Ireland to be with their son. His father is still recovering from an illness.

In an update on a fundraising page launched to help support Anthony’s family during a very difficult time, his parents thanked the public for their generosity which has meant that they can stay by their beloved son’s bed as he recovers.

“We’re truly overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and thoughtfulness. It exceeded all our expectations and we’re beyond grateful,” an update on the GoFundMe.

“Because of your generous donations, we can stay by Anthony’s bedside to support him on his long road to recovery. Your kind gesture has significantly impacted us and we can’t thank you all enough. May God bless you all for your generosity. Please keep us in your prayers, as we will with you all”.

The Kerryman suffered broken bones which will require future surgical procedures, as well as significant head trauma following the accident.

Anthony had his first of many surgeries recently, and while the surgery went well, he became unwell afterwards, but his parents say he is “fighting his way” back.

“We’re delighted to say that Anthony had his first surgery of many this week, it was a pretty invasive surgery and as a brain trauma patient even more challenging for him.

“Even though the surgery went well, unfortunately, Anthony himself has become quite unwell since his surgery and is been treated for an infection at present.

“To end on a positive note, Anthony has shown slight signs of response to his parents at times, that shows us again his competitive streak comes to light, and he is fighting his way back to us.”

The fundraiser in aid of Anthony and his recovery has been met with massive generosity, with hundreds of donations, raising €46,160, far surpassing the €30,000 target. To donate to the fundraiser, go here.
