A flight headed to the US was forced to make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport on Tuesday after pilots detected a technical glitch with the aircraft.

United Airlines flight UA119 departed Edinburgh at around 11.45am yesterday and was heading to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

However, as the aircraft was travelling over the Atlantic Ocean and nearing Iceland, the pilots detected a hydraulic issue with the plane.

A message was passed to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Dublin, and the aircraft made a u-turn and diverted to Dublin Airport.

The aircraft landed on runway 28L almost four hours after departure and a full emergency plan involving airport fire rescue and the Dublin Fire Department was put in place.

Two fire engines and a fire vehicle from Dublin Airport Fire & Rescue Service were pictured next to the aircraft on the tarmac after it made the emergency landing.

The Boeing 757-200 had to undergo under maintenance at Dublin Airport and the flight was subsequently cancelled.

United Airlines confirmed that there was an issue with an indicator light in the flight deck, and all passengers had to disembark from the aircraft after it landed in Dublin.

A spokesperson for Dublin Airport said: "DAA, the operator of Dublin Airport, can confirm that flight UA119, flying from Edinburgh to Chicago, diverted to Dublin Airport this afternoon, safely landing shortly before 3.30pm."

A United Airlines spokesperson added: "United flight 119 diverted to Dublin to address an indicator light in the flight deck.

"The flight landed safely, and all passengers deplaned normally at the gate. We are rebooking our customers on alternative flights to get them to their final destinations as soon as possible."
