Ms McDonald performed a reading during the ceremony.Fr Joe Kennedy told the congregation that Mr McDonald’s sister Maeve and his other sisters had been “very involved” in the church and it was fitting that his funeral was taking place in the parish.

He also prayed for the “conflict in various parts of our world, particularly Gaza and Ukraine. He added: “And indeed worrying times too in the North of Ireland at this time. We pray for peace in our world.”

Following communion, Fr Kennedy invited Mr McDonald’s grandson Gearoid, the son of Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou, to sing. He sang Caledonia by Scottish singer Dougie MacLean. As the funeral procession left the church, Gearoid sang Yesterday by The Beatles.
