Kieran McGeeney took aim at his critics after leading his Armagh side to the county's first All-Ireland title in 22 years and just their second ever.

The Orchard County defeated Galway by 1-11 to 0-13 in an exceptionally tight final, which many had expected prior to throw-in at Croke Park.

Armagh's style of play and McGeeney's tactics have been called out by many over the years, including Joe Brolly, who was particularly scathing in his criticism of the 52-year-old after their Ulster final loss to Derry last year.

Asked about criticism aimed at him after the game, McGeeney told RTE: "I suppose when you're around football long enough that you find out it's the people who know very little who make a lot of noise.

"I see fellas writing nonsense like manager telling fellas not to go forward with the ball, not to score and if he keeps playing like this he's going to lose by a point. You be going what planet do they live on like? It's obvious they haven't even been involved, but it's not my job to knock or to bang back, you just have to keep going."

Tyrone legend Peter Canavan was on punditry duty for RTE and told how criticism motivates McGeeney.

He said: "Some people, some managers, criticism might hurt them, but McGeeney, criticism motivates him and that's obvious."
