GAA President Jarlath Burns has been praised for a "powerful speech" as he singled out the unsung heroes of our national games after the All-Ireland football final.

Burns saw his native Armagh win the All-Ireland title for only the second time in their history as they defeated Galway 1-11 to 0-13 at Croke Park on Sunday.

The occasion was even more special for Burns as his son Jarlath Óg was a member of Kieran McGeeney's winning side.

Burns has become renowned as an articulate speaker since taking over the GAA presidency, and he delivered another rousing speech on the biggest occasion. This time he paid tribute to many of the GAA people whose work and effort can go unseen.

He said: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you are a parent who has put up a set of GAA posts in your back garden, this belongs to you.

"If you are a coach from underage to senior, this belongs to you.

"If you are a member of a committee at any level that voluntarily organises our games, this belongs to you.

"If you are a linesman or an umpire at our club matches or our underage games in cold winters and wind, this belongs to you.

"If you line the pitch or cut the grass or put out flags, today belongs to you.

"If you make the tea after the game, or if you are a teacher who gives their time to help our pupils and develop our games, this belongs to you.

"Today is your day because the GAA is where we all belong."

Burns then had the privilege of congratulating his native county before handing the Sam Maguire Cup to Armagh captain Aidan Forker.

"Today belongs to Ard Mhacha," Burns said. "Today belongs to a man who lifted the cup here in 2002 and who stuck with this team for the last ten years, he's now the manager, Kieran McGeeney, 'Geezer'.

"I know that while many of you today are thinking about loved ones who are not here today and absent friends, I know that the people of Armagh will not mind if I single out the Grimley family, and Niall Grimley in particular, for the loss they suffered.

"Now the formalities. To a man from the Lough shore and Maghery, who has struggled with this team for the last 13 seasons. There's his wife and his child, they made the same sacrifices he has.

"Now, it gives me great pleasure to present the Sam Maguire Cup to the captain of Armagh, Aidan Forker."

Burns' speech has been lauded on social media as one of the best Croke Park speeches of our time:
