Prince William's heartbreaking plea to Princess Diana about father Charles
An eye-opening new royal biography sheds some light on Prince William's 'complex' relationship with his late mother, Princess Diana, including his heartbreaking plea about father King Charles III
The marriage of King Charles III and Princess Diana came crashing down in spectacular fashion, amid reports of affairs and mutual unhappiness behind the palace walls.
The couple, who married in a fairytale ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral in 1981, separated in 1992, and finalised their divorce in 1996 - just one year before Diana's tragic death in Paris. This transitional period was immensely difficult for Charles and Diana, who had to deal with their personal heartache in the public eye.
For their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, their parents' bitter divorce was also a very painful experience - and for eldest child William in particular it meant having to take on an emotional support role far beyond his years. In a passage published by the Mail Online, Jobson spoke of William's 'heartache' amid the drama of his parents' turbulent divorce, revealing that: " William's relationship with his mother was also more complex than is generally understood." According to Jobson, Diana leant upon William, using him as her 'emotional crutch', and the difficult family dynamics took a toll upon the young prince. Jobson continued: "He asked Diana to stop saying negative things about his father to him, because he didn't want to take sides. And he has admitted that, on occasion, he felt embarrassed by his mother's behaviour."
