Ireland star Jayson Molumby was caught up in a row with a Mallorca player in a pre-season friendly with West Brom.

The game was tied at 0-0 just over five minutes before halftime when midfielder Molumby went on a run and was tripped leading to both players seemingly striking out as tempers flared.

The coming together with Mallorca player Samú Costa led to a brawl between both sides as they eventually had to be separated.

A clip of the altercation has gone viral on social media, with some fans joking that tonight’s UFC action had begun early.

There was a mixed reaction to the incident as one fan posted: “Needs a long suspension. No place for that in the game.”

Another commented: “class that. need more punches thrown in footy, it’s class when it happens in rugby.”

One fan said: “I mean they're touching heads, hardly a headbutt; then the other player hits him and he hits him back.”

Molumby missed Ireland’s friendlies with Hungary and Portugal during the summer through an injury suffered midway through last season.

When asked about playing those games for Ireland beforehand, West Brom boss Carlos Corberán said: "It’s impossible. The challenge is to start the pre-season with him.

“That’s the only possible target that we have. We knew that with the surgery it was a long-term injury.

“He has a boot, he is on the bicycle with his boot – one side with his normal foot, with the other with the boot. It’s still this. He is in the process of this.”
