New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is yet to splash the case in this summer's transfer window but has been urged by a club legend to stage a coup for one of the league's best wingers
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been prompted to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who John Barnes believes Jurgen Klopp would've loved.
Slot has a daunting task on his hands, taking over from the legendary German boss at Anfield, and has yet to make a signing during this window.
However, Gordon has been a target for Liverpool since June. Any deal looks to have stalled, but if Slot wishes to emulate Klopp's success on Merseyside, then recruiting a player the former coach would've wanted is a good start.
Liverpool icon Barnes believes that Klopp would've attempted to purchase Gordon were he still in charge and that the club's new boss should breathe fire back into the scuppered deal.
Newcastle's star winger - and boyhood Reds fan - was first linked with a switch to Anfield following his club's need to adhere to the Premier League's PSR deadline.
Yet, other outgoings balanced the books, so left with little motivation to sell, the Magpies stood firm on their near-£100million asking price and the deal was put on ice.
Barnes thinks the club should reignite their interest in Gordon, telling bettingexpert.com: "We like local players and he's not only English but he's a Scouser. He's got energy and lots of pace, he’s very dynamic and he’s a player that even Jurgen Klopp would have liked.
"If Arne Slot is looking at Gordon as an option, he would be great at Liverpool. The interest in Gordon is leading me to believe Liverpool are going to be a very intense, driven and high pressing team."
The inevitable departure of Mohamed Salah on Liverpool's wing could motivate interest in Gordon. Huge bids from Saudi Pro League sides have reportedly been thrown around, and contract negotiations with the Egyptian haven't progressed.
It appears that interest is mutual, too. It was reported that Gordon had conversations with England team-mates in Germany while on duty at Euro 2024 about a possible move to Liverpool.
