Kellie Harrington will begin the defence of her Olympic title against either Italian or Turkish opposition in the last 16 of the 60kg category on Monday.

The Dubliner, who memorably took gold in Tokyo three years ago, was seeded for yesterday’s draw in Paris where ten Irish fighters were in the pots.

She will face the winner of tomorrow’s bout between Italy’s Alessia Mesiano and Gizem Ozer.

Michaela Walsh also received a first round bye and will face Bulgaria’s Svetlana Kamenova Staneva in her first bout in the 57kg competition on August 2.

50kg fighter Daina Moorehouse is another to receive a bye and will begin her Paris campaign on August 1, while Ashbourne’s Jenny Lehane will make her Olympic debut on July 30 against Chang Yuan of China after getting a bye.

75kg second seed Aoife O’Rourke will face Elzbieta Wojcik on July 31. The Roscommon boxer has beaten Wojcik in each of their four meetings and booked her spot in Paris when they clashed at the European Games last year on a split decision.

Grainne Walsh will face Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori in the women’s 66kg competition.

In the men’s draw, Aidan Walsh faces a home favourite Makan Traore on Sunday in the 71kg tournament, while Sligo’s Dean Clancy will face Jordan’s Obada Alkasbeh in the round of 32 tomorrow.

Heavyweight Jack Marley faces Poland’s Mateusz Bereznicki in the round of 16 on Sunday, while Tyrone’s Jude Gallagher begins his campaign against Carlo Paalam of the Phillipines next Wednesday.
