Ireland's boxers are waiting to learn whether their passage towards a medal at Paris 2024 will be smooth or rocky.

The high performance unit has qualified a record 10 boxers for the Games under head coach Zaur Antia. Included in that number are four Tokyo Olympians - gold medal winner Kellie Harrington, bronze medallist Aidan Walsh, his brother Michaela and Aoife O'Rourke.

There are six Games debutants also in Paris - Daina Moorehouse, Jenny Lehane, Jude Gallagher, Dean Clancy, Jack Marley and Grainne Walsh.

Harrington, O'Rourke and Marley are Ireland's three seeded boxers so will hope for a quick - and easier - journey to a medal fight, but there are no guarantees. There are also no guarantees that any of the 10 boxers will receive a bye in the first round when the draw is made at 6.30pm Irish time at the North Paris Arena this evening.

"Because each of the weight categories is different, there's no guarantee of a bye," explained the IABA's high performance director Tricia Heberle.

"We haven't had any byes in the qualifying events so we're probably due, but whatever the result of the draw, we'll deal with it. We've been doing a lot of work across all the qualifying events, scouting different opponents and then as particular boxers from other countries started qualifying for the Games, we started building up a lot of data.

"A bye could be a bonus for someone but I also know that our group just wants to get started."

The squad arrived at the Olympic Village on Monday, battle hardened from a pre-Games camp in Saarbrucken, while the men crossed the border into France to spar against Cuba in Lyon and the women sparred with a number of other national squads.

There were eight other boxing nations in Saarbrucken and, with other sports such as table tennis and badminton also there, Heberle felt the multi-sport environment would have benefited the Irish boxers.

"It provided a great high performance setting," she said. "It was almost like a mini version of going into the Olympic Village. "But through that sparring camp, for each of these athletes they're in a really good place because Zauri and the coaches have really focused on individualising the programmes.

"We're in the final stages now and there's an absolute readiness about the athletes and staff."

The International Boxing Association has announced that it is to award prize money to medal winners. Heberle admits that there has been no indication to the boxers from the IABA as to whether they can accept a cash prize from the controversial world body that has not run the Olympic boxing programme since Rio.

"Look, nothing's come my way as performance director so whether that's a conversation that has happened at board level," she said. "At the moment we're just focusing on getting to the Games, the last few days of preparation and giving the boxers the best possible chance of success in every bout.

"It may well be that decisions have been made but it certainly hasn't come to the High Performance Unit and I'm actually very comfortable with that. I think it would be a distraction, to be honest with you."
