Dermot O'Leary was quick to step in to defuse a This Morning situation after a debate had got heated.

On Thursday's programme (July 25), hosts Alison Hammond and the former X Factor star had been chatting to Nick Ferrari, Ashley James and Martin Lewis about the high rising statistics around shoplifting in the UK.

The Money Saving Expert and LBC radio host didn't exactly see eye-to-eye on the subject, with the pair sharing opposing views. Martin was very much waving the flag that more needed to be done from a government point of view to support families in poverty.

Despite acknowledging that some people were stealing items from shops out of sheer desperation, Nick could simply not condone or agree with the act of theft.

The pair clashed horns live on-air, with Dermot and Alison both lunging in to move the programme on after things turned heated and voices were raised.

After the situation had been defused, Nick attempted to further rally-up Martin as he made a dig about the situation once more. They'd moved on to another topic, about the need to save cash in the UK.

Ashley had been talking about a situation where her cash was rejected for a coffee she'd been hoping to purchase, when Nick chimed in with: "So she stole it."

"Let's not go back to that conversation again," shot back Ashley as Dermot defended: "Ohh Nick, you're a stirrer."

Meanwhile, last week Martin appeared on the programme via video link only for his segment to be cut short after they'd faced technical difficulties in the studio.

Kicking off, Dermot stumbled momentarily before announcing: "We'll be speaking to Eileen." The TV anchor then asked: "Do we have Eileen," and then informed the audience: "Sadly, not no."

Alison tried to assist her fellow presenter, adding: "Let's have a look, the phone in... on air... Tina." Dermot clarified: "Nope, that's yesterday, her sister isn't coming to her wedding," as the segment was cut short.
