Kieran McGeeney explains truth

Armagh boss Kieran McGeeney has revealed how he acquired his nickname - and we’ve been spelling it wrong all along. McGeeney has been affectionately known as ‘Geezer’ for most of his life but it actually has nothing to do with that slang term and is instead in reference to an episode around geysers - a hot spring that sends water and steam into the air - from his school days.

McGeeney was in conversation with his Peter Canavan for the RTE Sport ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland final when his old Tyrone adversary asked him how the moniker originated. He explained: “It goes back to primary six, I think it was, in Mullaghbawn. There was a fella called Adrian Grant. We used to have to do our work and if you finished early you’d be able to do the drawings on the black board.

“It was Mrs McCann’s class and we done a story on geysers that day, the hot water blowing the top and all that sort of stuff. Even back then you could say that I had fiery temper! I’ve definitely calmed now, completely mellowed!

“He talked about McGeeney and geyser sounding similar and Mrs McCann asked him, ‘Who’s your partner?’ and he said, ‘Geyser!’ That was it.”

Canavan concluded the near half-hour chat by asking McGeeney to tell him “something about ‘Geyser’ which the public don’t know”, to which he replied: “I’m an Elvis Pressley fan!”
