BBC Two viewers in the UK were astonished and bewildered by the All-Ireland hurling final on Sunday after the match was broadcast on the channel for the first time.

Clare became All-Ireland champions for the first time in 11 years after beating Cork in an extraordinary extra-time hurling decider by 3-29 to 1-34 yesterday. Patrick Horgan became the all-time top scorer in the All-Ireland championship by registering nine points in the game and Robert Downey kept the Rebels in the game with one of the best goals ever seen on the Croke Park pitch.

The game was broadcast on BBC Two for the first time ever on Sunday, drawing a massive viewership all around as fans, new and old, tuned into the match. Viewers in the UK turning on the tele to watch the hurling for the first time were blown away by the “mad sport”.

One mesmerised viewer posted: “Wtf is this hurling on BBC Two. Dont understand it but what a game.”

Another wrote: “BBC Two is showing hurling and I don’t think I’ve ever been so invested in a game I know nothing about”.

A new fan urged: “I urge anyone who has never watched before, tune into BBC Two right now to watch the second half of the All-Ireland Hurling Final. Fastest game on grass, brutally physical, 80,000+ crowd, and one of the most skillful sports in the world. You won't be disappointed.”

One more penned: “Hurling appears to be a mix of UFC, rugby, hockey, football, baseball, the egg and spoon race all whilst hitting a snooker ball as hard as you can as high into the sky as possible towards goal with what looks like the bones of a tomahawk steak. 10/10. Would recommend.”

A fourth agreed: “Turned on BBC this afternoon and have seen this mad sport called hurling. It’s wild! Quidditch, Lacrosse, Hockey, MMA, Rugby, Soccer and Egg and Spoon all in one.

“You Irish guys are crazy! This All-Ireland Hurling Final is going to extra-time now - get it on!”

Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap posted: “Nice to read so many positive comments from people seeing hurling for the first time on the BBC today.

“As you marvel at the skill, strength, passion, and ferocity of the ancient game don’t forget that Britain tried to erase all Irish culture from the island for centuries. Fuck colonialism.”

Another fan welcomed new viewers to enjoy the sport: “To everyone watching the hurling final on BBC, you're very welcome to the greatest sport on earth.”
