Do you think of yourself as a bit of a genius? How about a maths whizz? If so, check out this baffling calculation that has stumped the internet.

Keeping your brain active is known to help improve cognitive performance, enhance memory, and help with focus and attention. Some even believe that regular brain workouts can delay the symptoms of dementia.

Brainteasers come in all shapes and sizes, and this puzzle is proving to be so hard that apparently, only those with a high IQ can solve it. Although it will force your brain to think outside the box, by challenging yourself to solve the problem you will be improving your mind's ability to focus on a task, as well as your memory and overall cognitive ability.

One test question is proving really difficult for those who struggle at maths, but also those who deem themselves good at it. The seemingly simple question asks people to complete an equation – but it's not as easy as it seems.

The problem is that it has left people stumped, with most people not being able to decide between two different answers. So can you work it out?

The maths test question shared on social media reads: "3x3-3÷3+3". The challenge was first posted on Instagram 's Threads and has racked up hundreds of comments from people trying to solve it.

Now, at first glance, one might attempt to solve the problem in the sequence that it’s in. This would equate to: three multiplied by three equals nine. Nine minus three equals six, six divided by three equals two, add three and the final answer would be five.

This is the answer many people arrived at but unfortunately, it's not correct. In mathematics, there is a process called BIDMAS, or BODMAS (PEMDAS if you're in America). BIDMAS is an acronym used to tell you the correct order to complete an equation when there are different operations. It stands for Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

While many people came up with five, others used their brain power to explain the sequence and determine the correct answer. One user explained: "To solve the mathematical equation correctly, we use the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS: Parentheses/Brackets, Exponents/Orders, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)). Here are the steps: 1. Perform multiplication and division first: 3 x 3 = 9 and 3 / 3 = 1

"2. Substitute the results back into the equation: 9 - 1 + 3, 3. Perform addition and subtraction in sequence: 9 - 1 = 8, 8 + 3 = 11. So, the solution is= 11"

The correct answer is 11. Did you get it right? Let us know in the comments below.
