The 'forgotten' characters of The Princess Diaries and where they are now
It's been 23 years since Princess Diaries hit our screens, and it's cherished by many who grew up in the early noughties - but, while the film catapulted Anne Hathaway to fame, there are some characters we haven't seen for years
Disney 's The Princess Diaries is a film that holds a special place in many hearts.
When Anne Hathaway took on the role of Mia Thermopolis, the world was never the same again. People related to the shy, nerdy teenager who learns she is actually the heir to the throne of a European kingdom.
From Mia's coming of age to a pretty glam makeover - the movie was loved by people all over the world. Over the past few months, there have been many viral rumours about plans for another sequel, but there are some faces in the original film you may have forgotten. It turns out the cast all went in different directions, and had very contrasting careers. Here's what happened to some of the "forgotten" stars.
Robert Schwartzman (aka Michael Moscovitz)
Robert Coppola Schwartzman, now 41, played the role of Michael, Mia's love interest. As well as starring in the hit Disney movie, he's also appeared in Lick the Star (1998) and The Virgin Suicides (1999).
As well as this, he's directed a number of films such as Dreamland (2016), The Unicorn (2018) and The Argument (2020). Nowadays, he is more well-known as Robert Carmine, the lead vocalist of rock band Rooney.
Being a member of the Coppola family, many of his relatives also work in showbiz. His uncles are filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and opera conductor Anton Coppola, and he's the cousin of actor Nicolas Cage and filmmakers Sofia Coppola, Roman Coppola and Christopher Coppola.
Erik von Detten (aka Josh Bryant)
Erik von Detten, now 41, is both a singer and actor. He will be known to many as the boy who broke Mia's heart in The Princess Diaries - high school heartthrob Josh Bryant.
Erik also starred in Escape to Witch Mountain, Toy Story, Brink!, Meego and So Weird. Many may not know that he voiced the character of Erwin Lawson throughout the four years of Recess (1997-2001).
In 2018, he was reported to have started working for Rosland Capital, a precious metals asset management firm. According to reports, the former acting star now works in sales at a finance company.
Heather Matarazzo
Heather Matarazzo, now 41, played Lilly Moscovitz in The Princess Diaries. She also starred in the film's sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
Film buffs may also recognise her as Martha Meeks in Scream 3 (2000) and Scream (2022). She also appeared in The Devil's Advocate (1997), All I Wanna Do (1998) and Sorority Boys (2002).
In 2004, when she was 21, the actress came out as a lesbian in an article in the New York Daily News. Four years later, her publicist confirmed she was engaged to musician Caroline Murphy.
Sadly the couple split in 2012, but the separation was said to be amicable. Heather later married comedian Heather Turman in 2018. The actress has also shown an interest in politics, having endorsed and actively campaigned for Senator Bernie Sanders during the Presidential election back in 2016.
