A global IT outage has hit airlines, banks and broadcasters worldwide, with a number of services across Ireland hit by the Microsoft glitch.

Long delays are expected as Dublin Airport, Cork Airport, Knock Airport, Belfast Airport and Ryanair are reporting issues on Friday morning, along with Transport for Ireland and NCT centres. Aer Lingus has not reported any impact on services.

The failures appear to have been triggered by a corrupt Microsoft Windows anti-virus update that managed to affect systems across the globe, with Microsoft quickly working to fix the issue. Here is everything you need to know about how the outage has impacted Ireland:

Airports and airlines

Multiple airports around the country have reported delays due to the global IT outage and as a result, issues impacting airlines. Ryanair warned that there would be disruptions across the network due to “a global third-party system outage”, causing long queues at airports.

Planes were seen grounded at Dublin Airport on Friday morning due to the outage, with the airport advising any Ryanair passengers to arrive at least three hours before their flight to ensure there are no issues. American Airlines have also reported delays.

Ireland West Airport in Knock has also reported delays, sharing Ryanair’s statement. In Cork, flights to and from destinations including Rome, Paris and Zadar in Croatia are affected this morning. Aer Lingus has not issued a statement on delays due to the outage.

NCT centres

NCTS are currently experiencing disruption across the Test Centre and Contact Centre Network due to the Global IT outage which they have said is “out of their control”.

NCTS apologised for any inconvenience caused and advised those affected that the fee paid for today's test, will automatically move to their next scheduled appointment.

Broadcasting

Broadcasters have been hit by the outage on Friday morning, with Sky News going offline for a period due to the outage and other channels like SBS, ABC, and Network 10 also reported similar glitches.

Although RTÉ said its newsroom was hit by some "intermittent internet outages" early in the morning, their service was not affected.

Trains and busses

The Transport for Ireland app has gone down due to the outage on Friday, with Irish Rail and Bus Éireann advising passengers to be aware of this.

A spokesperson for TFI in a statement: "We apologise for the inconvenience caused this morning to our customers unable to use our TFI Live and TFI Leap Top-up mobile apps.

"There is a global outage affecting multiple countries at the moment. We don't have an estimated resolution time".

A Bus Éireann spokesperson said: “We wish to advise customers to plan their journey ahead and check out our website for service updates and timetable information”.

Banking

Thankfully, banking services in Ireland have not been affected by the outage. Even global banking platforms like Revolut are still up and running, with no issues reported on Friday.

Visa payments are also working normally. A spokesperson for payments firm Visa said: “There is no indication of any impact on Visa’s ability to process payments from this issue.
