Donald Trump declared "I shouldn't be here" as he has addressed his supporters at a jam-packed party convention, just days after surviving a harrowing assassination attempt. In a much-anticipated speech, the former President broke his silence about the moment he found himself under fire and bleeding at a Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday.

The Republican National Convention (RNC) wrapped up on Thursday, with former President Donald Trump formally accepting the GOP nomination for a third run at the highest office. This followed a star-studded and at times bizarre final day of the convention that saw Hulk Hogan tear off his shirt and endorse Trump, while his wife Melania made a rare public appearance - the former supermodel gliding in dressed in a striking red dress to support her husband as he spoke about the moment that shocked America.

Former President Trump described feeling as though he had been hit "hard", on that sunny day "in a Pennsylvania field." Appearing emotional, he detailed how he realised he was being shot at and fell to the floor, as a hail of bullets passed overhead. As he declared repeatedly that he "shouldn't be here" his adoring supporters shouted "yes you should".

He praised the Secret Service personnel who blocked the shooter's bullets by piling on top of him, also taking a moment to commemorate the man, Corey Comperatore who lost his life after being struck by a bullet while shielding his family. Hugging the firefighter jacket that belonged to Corey, Mr Trump kissed the firefighter chief's helmet, to cheers from the RNC audience, before returning to his speech.

As the former president entered on a rising platform from beneath the stage, the arena went dark, and a large sign that said 'Trump' in Hollywood-style lettering brightened behind him. He had a bandage still on his ear and mouthed the words to “God Bless the U.S.A.,” as Greenwood finished singing his song of the same name. The crowd chanted “U.S.A.,” and cheered as Trump approached the lectern. Some members of the audience were wearing cheese hats and many began crying as Trump spoke.

Marking his political resurgence four years after his defeat to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, this is Trump's third consecutive nod from the party. His chosen vice-presidential candidate, JD Vance, had rallied the same crowd the day before, reports the Mirror US.

“I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America. So tonight with faith and devotion, I proudly accept your nomination for president of the United States.”

His words were followed by chants of “Fight, fight, fight, fight,” and “Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump.” As he opened his speech, Trump pledged to be “a president for all of America.”

The Republicans saw big names take to the Milwaukee stage for the party's final day of the convention, with former Fox host Tucker Carlson firing up the crowd, before Hulk Hogan cheered "Trumpmania", only to be followed by a musical performance by Kid Rock.

The RNC unfolded in the wake of an alarming incident where Trump was shot during a rally on Saturday, July 13. Suffering a wound to the ear, he turned up at the convention with a bandage but appeared to be in high spirits

Kai Trump, his eldest grandchild, graced the stage on Wednesday, July 17, lauding her grandfather and reflecting on the shooting incident. "I was shocked when I heard that he had been shot, and I just wanted to know if he was OK. It was heartbreaking that someone would do that to another person," she expressed.

"A lot of people have put my grandpa through hell, and he's still standing. Grandpa, you are such an inspiration and I love you.

"The media makes my grandpa seem like a different person, but I know him for who he is," she said. "He's very caring and loving. He truly wants the best for this country, and he will fight every single day to make America great again."

Amidst the buzz of the RNC happening in Wisconsin, news broke from the White House that President Biden had tested positive for COVID-19 during his travels on Wednesday in Las Vegas.
