The University of Szeged (SZTE) plays an outstanding role in the application of innovative medical methods, especially in the treatment of cancer, the higher education institution informed MTI.

According to the press release, interventional oncology – a specialized branch of interventional radiology – is a relatively young discipline that opens up new perspectives in the treatment of cancer. These minimally invasive procedures involve interventions using diagnostic imaging tools such as ultrasound, CT and MRI. Although these methods are already widespread overseas, they are not yet widely used in Hungary. Electrochemotherapy, for instance, has been used in Szeged for several years. It uses electrical pulses to provide patients with more targeted and effective therapy.

The release quotes György Lázár, Dean of the Albert Szent-Györgyi Faculty of Medicine, SZTE, who stressed that the proportion of interventional radiology procedures among oncological treatments is increasing worldwide.

In Szeged, too, efforts are being made to develop and widely apply interventional oncology, as this method is one of the key pillars of the future in the treatment of cancer patients.

The professor pointed out that there are very few specialists in Hungary who practice this method to a high standard. In Szeged, an increasing number of patients are being treated with this method. The aim is to make SZTE a national center for innovative interventional oncological treatments.

Béla Kis, a graduate of the University of Szeged and head of the special interventional radiology department at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, is a major contributor to this development. Through his ties to the University of Szeged, he has offered his professional experience and support to his alma mater in the training of Szeged doctors and in telemedicine consultations. This will contribute to the national and international recognition of the Szeged Medical Center.

Judit Oláh, Head of the Oncotherapy Clinic, SZTE, explained that

oncological treatments today focus not only on prolonging survival and symptom relief, but also on improving the quality of life of patients.

She pointed out that for patients, quality of life, independence and the ability to care for themselves are often more important than simply prolonging life.

In the future, therefore, even greater emphasis would be placed on involving patients and their relatives in treatment decisions, taking into account individual goals and risks. The aim is to ensure that treatments are not only effective but also humane, so that patients can live their time with the disease with fewer side effects and a better quality of life, she stressed.
