The Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (BBGP), an international ballet competition organized by the Hungarian Dance University (MTE), started yesterday at the National Dance Theater and Müpa Budapest (former Palace of Arts).

The competition, running until Friday, is open to 14-24 year olds. Professional schools and ensembles are competing in three age groups in classical ballet, modern dance, solo, and pas de deux.

The event gives young dancers the opportunity to compete on an international stage in front of an international jury.

The second Budapest Ballet Grand Prix received 157 entries from 31 countries, and after the pre-selection process, 90 participants will perform in front of a jury of renowned ballet artists and choreographers. The jury is chaired by Gyula Harangozó Jr. and includes Maia Makhateli, Aki Saito, Federico Bonelli, and Krzysztof Pastor.

The event will close with a gala on Friday. The competition takes place at the National Dance Theater, while the ceremony will be held at Müpa Budapest.

During the competition, workshops will be organized and the competitors have two opportunities to discuss their performances with the jury.

The event offers young dancers the chance to network and get their careers off to a flying start, with scholarships and career opportunities for the best dancers.

A book launch will also be held at the BBGP: The Art of Performance by Megan Fairchild, former principal soloist with New York City Ballet. The symposium and book launch is free to attend but registration is required.

On the final competition day, Thursday, November 21, at 1 p.m. at the National Dance Theater, an English-language workshop will focus on how to stay healthy while getting the most out of yourself and how to improve your performance in sport and the arts with sustainable tools.
