EU Foreign Affairs Committee:

Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, has reaffirmed EU’s enlargement as a cornerstone of European stability and economic recovery. Speaking to the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, he emphasized the process’s credibility and dynamism, anchored by the 2020 reform prioritizing the rule of law.

Mr. Várhelyi highlighted notable progress in candidate countries. Serbia was urged to advance reforms and align more closely with EU policies, particularly regarding its relation with Kosovo. Moldova was commended for its recent pro-EU referendum despite Russian interference. Kosovo, enjoying visa-free travel since January, was encouraged to push reforms. Ukraine must combat corruption and ensure minority protections, while Georgia’s path to accession remains conditional on addressing EU concerns.

The rule of law and minority rights were central themes. MEP Viktória Ferenc criticized Ukraine’s failure to fully restore rights for the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, citing their exclusion from a key national council. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions, including Serbia’s ties with China and Russia’s hybrid campaigns, underscore the challenges faced by aspiring members.

Türkiye, despite stalled accession talks, remains a vital EU partner.

Olivér Várhelyi highlighted progress in migration cooperation, democratic dialogue, and reconciliation in Cyprus while acknowledging persistent challenges in Turkish-EU relations.

The politician’s tenure as Commissioner is marked by significant enlargement progress, yet political delays cast uncertainty over his future role. Despite setbacks, his focus on tailored economic plans and integration underscores his commitment to EU expansion.
