A number of Hungarian politicians have reacted to the victory or strong showing of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Sunday’s state elections in Thuringia, Germany, and in neighboring Saxony. According to polls, the party won between 32.8 percent of the vote in Thuringia and between 30.5 percent in Saxony.
Another major winner of the state elections was Sarah Wagenknecht’s party, Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), that won 15.8 percent and 11.8 percent respectively, coming third in both states. Formerly a politician for Germany’s far-left Die Linke, her new party can be best described as a Marxist formation with a national, sovereingntist focus.
The big loser in the election could be Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s German Social Democratic Party (SPD), which won just 6.1 and 7.3 percent respectively. The Greens will be ousted from the Thuringian parliament and the Liberals (FDP) are not expected to win seats in any of the state parliaments.
AfD co-chair Tino Chrupalla said after the exit polls were published that his party had won the mandate to govern the province of Thuringia. “Today is a truly historic day in Thuringia and a very good result for Saxony,” Chrupalla told ZDF public television. The party leader called the result in Thuringia sensational. “We are leading by a safe 10 percent in Thuringia, so we have a clear mandate to govern, this is democracy,” he added. He said voters wanted a change of policy in Saxony and Thuringia.
Höcke, the local leader of the AfD, called the regional parliamentary elections a historic victory. “We are ready to take on the responsibility of government,” Höcke said. The Christian Democrats will not enter into a coalition with the AfD in either Thuringia or Saxony, said CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann, who admitted it would not be easy to create a parliamentary majority. Michael Kretschmer, head of the CDU’s state government in Saxony, said he believed his party would be able to continue to lead the state government. It will not be easy,” he added, speaking in Dresden.

Balázs Orbán, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Political Director wrote in a social media statement that the “German states sent a clear message to Brussels and Berlin: no migration, no gender, no war. Today’s German state elections caused a political earthquake”.
The forces governing Germany in a pro-war, pro-migration, and pro-gender coalition received a total of 15 percent”.
“Everyone else voted for change. Germans also see that European politics have changed: there is no longer a division between the right and the left, only between those who fight for national interests and those who serve foreign interests”, wrote the minister.
Immigration policy broke Germany into two.
