There were fewer schools per students in primary education during the 2022-2023 academic year compared to the previous year, according to a survey released by the Statistical Service on Thursday.
During the 2021-2022 academic the number of primary schools came to 360, with 56,853 pupils; compared to 2022-2023 with 358 schools and 58,168 pupils.
Across the board, in 2022-2023 the total number of pupils – primary, secondary, technical schools – numbered 208,374. This marked a 2.6 per cent increase on the previous academic year.
As for teachers, in 2022-2023 they numbered 16,475 – compared to 15,907 the previous academic year.
In tandem, the number of schools was 1,351 – compared to 1,313 in 2021-2022.
The survey also provided a breakdown of the average state expenditure per student: €5,770 for pre-school; €8,082 for primary school; €12,026 for secondary school; €14,361 for technical schools; and €13,591 for university.
In addition, the survey found that although in absolute numbers more was spent on public education in 2022-2023 compared to the previous year, expenditures had declined as a percentage of GDP and the state budget.
In 2022-2023 total expenditures on education tallied at €1.44 billion, or 13 per cent of the state budget. During the previous academic year, expenditures had come to €1.35 billion – corresponding to 13.1 per cent of the state budget.
