The suspect in a murder case committed on July 3 in Peyia on his brother-in-law is to answer the charges at the Paphos Criminal Court on January 31.
The 50-year-old, who had been in custody since his arrest, did not respond to charges faced on Wednesday, after his lawyer, Neophytos Christou, requested time at the trial to receive additional witness material, and to provide CCTV material to the defence.
Public prosecutor Andreas Hadjikyrou did not object to the defence’s request. The court set the case for January 31for the 50-year-old to answer the indictment with the main charge of homicide of his 43-year-old brother-in-law.
According to the police, the incident began with an argument between the 50-year-old and the victim. Subsequent examinations revealed that the victim, along with the suspect and other relatives had been having a family meal when the argument escalated.
In circumstances under investigation, the victim and the suspect entered a confrontation while others present intervened.
The suspect allegedly left the scene but returned shortly afterwards with a gun, with which he fatally wounded the victim and fled the scene. The suspect was arrested in the early hours of July 4 and confessed to the crime under police questioning.
