Paphos man jailed for seven ye

A 56-year-old man from Paphos was on Friday sentenced to seven years in prison after having been convicted of robbing an optician’s shop last year.

He will also serve concurrent sentences lasting four years and two years a separate burglary at a different optician’s shop, and a concurrent 12-month sentence for having burgled a residential property.

The man had entered the optician’s shop shortly before 5am on June 18 last year, causing the premises’ burglar alarm to sound.

Upon hearing the alarm, relatives of the shop’s owner rushed to it, finding a “suspicious person” stood outside. The “suspicious person” then pulled out a knife and attacked them, injuring one of the relatives, a 27-year-old man, on his right hand, before fleeing.

The police then launched an investigation into the matter, finding that around 100 pairs of glasses had been stolen. They found a total of 38 pairs of glasses in a cardboard box where the relatives of the shop’s owner had found the suspicious person.

The man was then arrested on June 22 last year, with evidence subsequently emerging linking him to a burglary carried out at a separate optician’s shop and at a residential property, both of which are located in Paphos. He was eventually found to have been the culprit in all three cases.
