Paphos police arrested two men overnight following a chase and shots fired by officers, in a drugs and dangerous driving case.
According to the police, officers ay 9pm in a coordinated operation, intercepted suspicious persons and in a vehicle parked with the engine running.
Officers approached the vehicle and signaled to the driver who attempted to escape as soon as he realised the police presence. In his attempt to flee he collided with two police cars endangering the members of the police, who got out of their cars to check the damage, police said.
The driver then managed to escape driving recklessly and dangerously through Paphos and entered a dirt road where he collided with a stationary vehicle and came to a standstill.
Police gave chase and fired three shots at the vehicle’s tyres to stop the suspect.
Police proceeded to establish the identity of the men, aged 20 and 25. A search of the vehicle turned up three grams of cannabis, a hand-made half-smoked 6.5cm long cigarette, a precision scale with traces of cannabis, and €4,630 in cash.
Officers arrested the pair and the driver underwent a preliminary drug test with positive result. The 25-year-old subsequently admitted to possession of the illegal items after police questioning, while the 20-year-old was released as no incriminating evidence against him was found.
