More than 80 per cent of recent graduates in Cyprus were employed in 2023, according to data collected by the European Union’s statistical agency Eurostat.

This figure is a slight decrease compared to 2022’s figure of 81.4 per cent and sees the island’s employment rate for recent graduates drop to just the 20th highest in the EU.

At the same time, the EU-wide average grew from 82.4 per cent in 2022 to 83.5 per cent last year.

Malta had the highest rate of recent graduates in employment, with 95.8 per cent, with the Netherlands’ rate of 93.2 per cent the second highest, and Germany’s rate of 91.5 per cent the third highest.

At the other end of the scale, the lowest rates of recent graduate employment in the EU were recorded in Italy, where just 67.5 per cent of recent graduates are employed, in Greece, which has a rate of 72.3 per cent, and in Romania, which has a rate of 74.8 per cent.

Recent graduates are counted as people aged between 20 and 34 years old who completed their higher education within the last three years.

The stats do not stipulate those graduates who may be considered underemployed.
