A total of 15 people appeared in court in Morphou on Sunday, accused of having stolen 2,500 heads of garlic from a field.
The police’s representative in court said the garlic had been piled up in a field in the village of Avlona and were stolen between July 1 and July 8.
They said the 15 people, all of whom were employed as garlic pickers, were arrested on Saturday in Zodia, where they all live.
A subsequent search of their house found a total of 28 kilograms of garlic were being stored inside. The garlic was seized and taken as evidence.
The police representative requested that the 15 all be remanded in custody for three days as the police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing and statements needed to be taken from all 15 suspects.
In addition, they said, all 15 would need to be questioned regarding their immigration status.
Judge Mine Ozankaya acquiesced to the police’s request, and all 15 suspects were handed three-day remands.
