Cozy shelters for hikers to be built in seven places ahead of next season
Shelters have bunk bed, wood stove and other equipment.
The state enterprise Lesy SR (Forests of the Slovak Republic) is preparing a project to construct a network of tourist shelters. Expected to be finished next spring in seven locations in western, central and eastern Slovakia, they are to supplement the network of hiking shelters on marked trails.
"Locations for tourist shelters were selected by the organisational units of Lesy SR, which know best both their territory and its use by hikers. The selection took into account the proximity of hiking trails, as well as the possibility of obtaining the necessary permits, balancing property and legal conditions and accessibility, since it will be necessary to take care of the shelters. Based on these factors, seven places were selected," explained the company.
In the western part of Slovakia, the shelters are to be built near the village of Podhradie, Topoľčany district, and the village of Horná Ves, Prievidza district. When it comes to central Slovakia, one will be placed near Čierny Balog, another near Turie, and Hrochoť. In the east, hikers will find the shelters near Šindliar and near Vyšná Rybnica.
The shelters will be made of wood and have metal roofs. They will be equipped with a table, bench, bunk bed, sleeping area and wood stove. Hikers will also be able to use the shelter attic for overnight stays.
"They will be used for occasional use or emergency overnight stays by the general public, hikers, forest visitors or forest workers as an emergency shelter against bad weather. The shelters will be accessible without restriction to everyone day or night, and will complement the existing network of shelters on marked trails in Slovakia," added the state enterprise.
"The completion will depend on the conditions in the winter months and expected to be handed over in the spring of 2025, so that they are ready for the upcoming season," explained the company.
