Celebration of running

The international Košice Peace Marathon, traditionally run on the first Sunday in October, is back with another edition. This year, the oldest marathon in Europe marks 100th anniversary of its inception, and thus a long tradition of running in this eastern-Slovak city. Elite runners from around the world are going to descend on Košice, testing their mettle while running through the historic city centre. Even if you don't participate, Košice Peace Marathon is an event worth visiting just to cheer the athletes. Click here for more information.

TIP: Košice showed Berlin how a marathon should be done, says Berlin Marathon founder.

American football

Though Nitra is primarily known as a hockey town, American football has surged in popularity over the past few months. Recently, the Nitra Knights clubs made history by winning the Czech Bowl, a league championship, as the first Slovak team to do so. On Saturday afternoon, the team's younger generation will face off against their Czech rivals in two matches. Admission is free, click here for more information.

Two more events will take place in northern Slovakia, one at the top of Veterné vrchol (lit. windy peak) near the town of Martin and the other in the town of Ružomberok.

Moreover on Sunday, the village of Varín near Žilina will join in on the fun and hold Šarkaniáda too. Although these event are mostly aimed at children, adults are of course welcome to take part as well.
