Investor has sky-high ambition

In the heart of the Demänovská dolina valley, central Slovakia, the owner of the Jasná resort plans to build the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge.

The bridge should span over 840 metres, connecting the Priehyba locality with Pekná vyhliadka viewpoint, and should be installed 120 metres above the valley floor, reports the My Liptov website.

The site is located within Low Tatras National Park.

"While the entire region thrives on the winter season in Jasná, the summer offerings still lack something truly attractive that would enhance visitors' options and serve as a reason for a summer holiday in Liptov," explained Jiří Trumpeš, director of the resort.

The footbridge is planned to be two-way.

The resort is currently preparing project documentation, which they aim to complete by the end of the year.

"The initial estimates suggest costs exceeding €10 million," added the director.

Ján Ďurica, head of the building authority in the village of Demänovská Dolina, has said that there is currently no official request for a permit for the proposed suspension bridge in the village.

The village has faced criticism over extensive development. In 2021, the village council adopted an amendment to the zoning plan, prohibiting further construction in areas designated as open land. They are now working on a completely new zoning plan, notes My Liptov.

Activists have already disapproved the idea of a suspension bridge in the village.

"In Demänovská Dolina, there are dozens of kilometres of hiking trails offering stunning views and scenery. There is no need to add more artificial elements to this environment," said the Pre dolinu civic association.

Michal Kiča (Demokrati), former deputy environment minister, has criticised not only the proposed bridge but also other development projects reportedly planned for Jasná. In addition to the bridge, these include a new ski slope, a cable car, and a parking garage.

"If the park authorities approve the developers' plans, it would constitute a disaster," he warned, adding that the longest bridge will be at the edge of a protected bird habitat.
