First Slovak F-16s to land home

On Monday evening, the first two Slovak F-16s are expected to land at the military airbase in Kuchyňa, western Slovakia. They are flying over the Atlantic Ocean and accompanied by a tanker that allows them to refuel, reports the Denník N daily.

The fighter jets are piloted by American pilots and temporarily bear the US insignia. As the daily notes, this flight shows the new capability of the Slovak Air Force, since its former Soviet-made MiG-29 jets were not equipped to refuel in the air.

According to schedule, the jets are expected to land after 20:00. President Peter Pellegrini, Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák, Chief of General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces, General Daniel Zmeko, and other Slovak and foreign guests, are to attend the ceremonial arrival.

On July 10, the BAK-12 aircraft arresting system was successfully tested at the airport. Slovakia ordered fourteen F-16 C/D Block 70's in total. The contract was concluded in late 2018, the delivery of the aircraft delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Later this year, a third jet will arrive.

The aircraft will be assigned to the base until the reconstruction of the Sliač airbase is complete.
