The announcement that the Italian Government, through the Ministry for the Environment, has officially approved the second interconnector between Malta and Sicily "is a result of the strategy and policies adopted by Nationalist Governments to ensure our country has a reliable electricity supply that supports the economy," a statement by the Nationalist Party read.
The statement, signed by the PN's Shadow Minister for Energy, Research, and Innovation Ryan Callus, said that "while welcoming with satisfaction the news of the project's approval, the PN also reminds that this project is becoming a reality thanks to European funds, which are available because Malta is now a member of the European Union."
The PN recalled that Enemalta's plan, even before 2013, was for Malta to have two interconnectors. "Had a Labour Government stuck to this plan, the second interconnector would have been completed earlier, and we would not have had to spend €37 million renting generators to expand the Electrogas power station's supply - a power station that is now proven to be a monument to corruption," the PN said.
In reply, the Labour Party said that after not even being able to deliver the first interconnector, and doing everything for our country to remain dependent on heavy fuel oil, the Nationalist Party today wants to take credit of the second interconnector and of the innovative projects that a Labour Party in Government, with skill and conviction, is pushing forward.
